HCRI, a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity, is the largest recycling cooperative in the United States, serving a geographical area covering 35,000 square miles including five counties, four cities, and one solid waste district. Each year, HCRI serves over 50,000 Montana residents.
HCRI created a unique program that has made recycling economically viable for remote, low population communities. The communities participating in the program have experienced a steady increase in the volume of recyclables and an associated decrease in landfill and/or transfer costs. In the period 1997 through 2010, the participating communities have experienced a total diversion of 46,000+ tons for a net savings of over $250,000.
